Will And Reason

Many of the leading figures of what came to be known as the Human BioDiversity (HBD) movement are reaching the age where they are no longer producing new work, but instead are part of retrospectives of the movement they created. This post in Aporia by Bo Winegard is a good example. It works as both a summary of Murray’s work and a summary of the hereditarian perspective on the human animal. “Hereditarian” is another word used for the biological realist wing of the human sciences.

It is not entirely accurate to call these people a movement as they have had no impact on how Western societies view human organization. If anything, the West has raced in the opposite direction of what should follow from the realities that have come from the human sciences. Since The Bell Curve was published thirty years ago, the blank slate, fanatical egalitarianism and universalism have become so entrenched in elite thinking that dissent is now criminal in many countries.

That is what you are seeing in the UK. The people being sent off to prison for voicing complaints about immigration are not being punished for opposing public policy, but for violating official orthodoxy with regards to the human condition. Across the West, any noticing of difference between groups of humans is blasphemy. Not only would The Bell Curve not get a publisher today, but it is also something of a miracle that it has not been put on the index of banned books, next to The Camp of the Saints.

Therein lies the most important lesson to come from the HBD scene. Facts and reason can never overcome belief. There is no questioning the science with regards to the human condition. It has confirmed thousands of years of observation that nature does not distribute her gifts equally. That is true with regards to individuals and with regards to groups of individuals. The reason you never take the MLK exist is not because you are immoral, but because you are rational.

Rationality is no match for belief, at least when it comes to politics. The promise of a guilt free future has won every battle regarding biology. Of course, it is the echo of Calvin that embedded racial guilt into the Western mind. Facts and reason had no impact on belief before, during or after the Civil War, because the fanatics behind the abolitionist cause were immune to facts and reason. Like all fanatics, they saw only that which confirmed their fanaticism.

The point here is that the defeat of human biodiversity, hereditarianism, biological realism, or whatever term you have for the facts of the human condition, was simply another battle in the long war between belief and reason. One side, the winning side, believes the human condition can be solved because they believe the cause of human conflict lies in the human mind and can therefore be eradicated. The other side has never had an answer to that claim.

Another lesson from the twilight of the human sciences is that knowledge for the sake of knowledge is a dead end. What matters in the affairs of man, therefore what matters with regards the human condition, is knowledge that leads men to act either on behalf of that knowledge or in opposition to it. Anything else is at best useless and at worst a reason for opponents to act on the claim that this new knowledge is a threat to the wellbeing of society.

In one of life’s great ironies, the HBD people never understood how their work could be seen as dangerously heretical. For all their knowledge about the mechanics of mankind, they have never understood the will that lies behind human action, preferring to believe what lies behind the motivations of their accusers is just as mechanical and sterile as their own understanding of man. Materialism is a terrible way to understand the why of the human condition.

More important, the HBD people could never shake their civic nationalist priors or even question them in light of their own work. The Bell Curve is the argument against liberal democracy, an argument understood long before the HBD people arrived. Despite the obvious conflict between what the science was telling us and what political science was demanding of us, the HBD people never lost faith in liberalism. They remain convinced it is the only political option.

It is not all bad for the HBD scene. It has, at least for a while, provided a moral authority of sorts for resisting the gathering darkness. There remains an “E pur si muove” mental space for dissidents to gather their thoughts about what is happening. Inside the mental space lies the flicker of hope that reality cannot be swamped by the fantastical reality of the prevailing orthodoxy. The foundation of the dissident cause are the people who accept the reality of the human condition.

In the end, however, it will not be men armed with charts and graphs who shall beat back the forces of darkness but the men who know that society is determined by those who understand it is always who shall overcome whom. If the West is to survive, it will be due to those who will it so and use any means necessary to prevail over those determined to turn out the lights on civilization. The only justification needed will simply be the desire to make it so.

An Old Story

For a little over a year, it has been clear to people who have followed the war in Ukraine that there is no winning scenario for Ukraine. The sanctions on Russia failed to change the Russian approach to the war. The hundreds of billions in NATO weapons, planning and support were not enough to beat back the Russian army. The great Ukraine offensive of 2023 was a stunning failure that eliminated any possibility of the Ukraine army holding the line in the Donbass.

The question has been how does the war end. For Ukraine, the best outcome is a negotiated settlement that includes a change in Ukrainian attitudes. Maybe NATO abandons the project and the Russians install new leaders. Maybe Zelensky figures out that he is about to be cut loose and cuts a deal with the Russians. Maybe Washington, hoping to save face, backs Zelensky in making a deal with the Russians. No matter how, the best option for Ukraine was a negotiated settlement.

That appears to be off the table now that the Ukrainians have launched this crazy incursion into the Kursk region of Russia. It appears that the plan was to reach the nuclear power plant in Kursk and then use it as blackmail. The Ukrainians would not just demand negotiations but require a Russian withdrawal as a condition for negotiations or they would blow up the nuclear power plant. As ridiculous as that sounds, the other explanations for this gambit are even nuttier.

Of course, this plan sounds like it is from a poorly made Hollywood action thriller, rather than a sober-minded military operation. The reason for that is the people running Ukraine are actors. For going on three years now they have spent far more time crafting creative narratives about the war than thinking soberly about how they can avoid being wiped off the map. For people who imagine reality is just a clever written story, this operation sounded brilliant.

The supreme role of narrative for Western political elites is evident in how they have reacted to this new production. It seems they had no part in its construction, or at least they were not told about it in advance, so they were unprepared to play their role in selling this as the next great event in the drama. Western media was not provided with a script, so they had no idea what to say. Eventually they settled on this being bad for Putin’s narrative, a thing that does not exist.

It is another example of the total lack of realism in our political class. The Ukraine war is an unnecessary venture for everyone involved except the Russians. A thousand years of history says they will not allow Ukraine to fall into the Western orbit. Otherwise, everyone else involved has practical reasons for not having this war, but the good feelings that come from good narratives have been too much to resist. The result is an unfolding catastrophe for the West.

This total lack of realism in the West seems to have finally reached an end point with the Russians after this latest caper. In a recent press conference, Putin said that it is now impossible to deal with Ukrainian leadership. While not closing the door to negotiations completely, he has now ruled out dealing with Zelensky. Other Russian officials are floating the idea of regime change in Kiev as a necessary precondition for any negotiated settlement to the war.

What that means is that the eventual collapse of the Ukrainian army, which is now accelerating due to the nutty decisions made by Kiev, will be followed by a political collapse, by force if necessary. In other words, if the West deciders it is time to make a deal with the Russians, that deal starts by cutting Zelensky loose, which in the context of Ukrainian politics means the whole crew must go. They will not go voluntarily, so it means the end game includes a civil war in Western Ukraine.

The Ukraine war is a microcosm of what is happening in the West. Every decision is based only in the moment without any thought of what comes next. Things are done voluntarily that should have been avoided, not because they are part of a larger strategy but because they fit the current narrative. It is as if once the story is created, the writers are sucked into it, losing all control of the plot. All they can do is respond as if they are now unwitting characters in the story.

This is harmless in the low-stakes world of parlor games in which members of the political class evolve, but in the practical world, it is a disaster. It leads to a scenario in which no one knows if the current president is alive or dead. No one seems to care because his character has been written out of the story. Who is actually making decisions is a mystery. It is the dynamic that created the condition for war in Ukraine and is now pushing it towards catastrophe.

On the one hand, it certainly seems like the West is now governed by emotion and symbolism, rather than practical considerations. The Kamala Harris campaign can be boiled down to a promise of feel goods. The entire production is a collection of symbolic shapes and sounds to transmit the simple idea that it feels good or that the alternative will make you feel bad. To his credit, Trump is offering tangible things that have some connection to practical reality.

The lesson of the Ukraine war, however, is that reality still matters. All the feel-good stories and symbols has not changed the fact that the Russian army is chewing up the Ukrainian army. The clever narratives cannot conceal the massive cemeteries full of dead Ukrainian soldiers. The question that arises from this war is whether Western elites will learn that the clever stories by the managerial class will not keep them from the gallows if things start to crumble.

The great lesson of history is that there is always a price to be paid for failed leadership and that price is paid by the people, then their rulers. Joseph de Maistre famously said that the people get the government they deserve. He was wrong. The lesson of the French Revolution is that the ruling elite gets the people they deserve. A ruling class that is concerned more with clever narratives than practical reality will face a people, who out of practical necessity, decide they must get a new ruling elite.

Escape From Reality

The great fear as the internet spread across American society was that things in this virtual world would somehow cross over into the real world. Usually this meant that the machines would get super intelligent and take over society. This is the underlying theme of movies like The Terminator. Alternatively, a being from inside the internet would make the jump into the meat space. This is the plot for the film Virtuosity. A virtual serial killer gets loose in the real world and does his worst.

Nothing like that has come to pass, but something worse may be happening and that is reality is being sucked into the virtual world. More accurately, people are spending so much time online that the virtual world is supplanting reality for them. We are seeing this with the Harris campaign, which is probably the most intensely online political program we have every experienced. Everything about it is based on winning the internet that day, which means it operates by the rules of the internet.

The most obvious example is how the Kamala Harris character has been reimagined by her developers into something disconnected from reality. From the presentation, one would never know she has been Vice President for the last four years or that she has spent those years arguing for the administration’s positions. Like a discarded scene from a video game, all of that is gone now. In its place is the new character whose only connection to the prior character is the name.

The disconnectedness extends to her campaign and its supporters. Trump has been stumping on the idea of exempting tips from income taxes. Whatever the merits of the idea, it is a clever way to appeal to young people. The other day, the Harris character announced its plan to not tax tips, as if it were something totally new that had never been mentioned by anyone. Miraculously, the people playing the Harris character online responded as if it was a total novel idea.

Of course, this being the age of mendacity, the new Harris gameplay comes with manufactured crowds online that cheer for it. There are fake polls that claim this character is now the most popular character in the game. It is destroying all of the orange baddies in this expansion pack. We know this because every day the lie machine we call mass media fills the game space with stories about how Trump is raging in his bunker about the greatness of the Harris character.

This upgraded version of Kamala Harris is now equipment with a lacky to do the things lackies do for the hero. Like the new Kamala Harris, the character called Tim Walz bears little resemblance to the old version. Instead of being a bloviating windbag who bores people with his imaginary tales of heroism in the military, this version is a folksy good old boy who just happens to hold all of the same opinions as the developers who created his character for the game.

What we are experiencing right now is a political campaign that exists only in the virtual world of the highly online. If you are not playing in this part of the game or you live in reality, you may not know about any of this. Maybe one of your favorite “influencers” has gone into panic mode for some reason and that got your attention. Otherwise, if you are not in this part of the game, none of this is real to you. The main reason for that is that nothing about this campaign is real thus far.

This is why the people most affected by this new release are the self-styled influencers who live entirely online. These people spend all day, every day, looking for something they can front-run in order to maintain the illusion that they are not just playing the game, but they are controlling it. The reason they are called influencers is not that they influence anyone, but that they are the most easily influenced. The right-wing influencer crowd cannot stop playing the new Harris character.

The highly online, of course, will argue that this is reality, and it is now changing the meat space, but how would they know? One of the weird aspects of virtual reality is that it is self-affirming to the people who have been sucked into it. For many of them, Twitter is reality and people outside of it do not exist. This is why influencers banned from Twitter were so desperate to get back on the platform. Having your account suspended is what passes for Hell in the virtual world.

That still leaves the question as to whether this is working. More people get their news from online sources than from legacy sources, so if you win the internet then it suggests you can influence people. On the other hand, the internet is a big place and people gravitate to that which confirms the opinions. One reason the undecided voter is a thing of the past is everyone now has an online tribe. Alternatively, they have a cable chat show they watch every night for their opinions.

The highly online like saying that arguing with a boomer is arguing with the television because all of their opinions come from television. Ironically, arguing with the highly online is arguing with the internet. The people playing the Nick Fuentes character right now have no ideas of their own. They have the ideas of the other players in the Nick Fuentes game space. It turns out that right-wing zoomers are just like the right-wing boomers they criticize. They just have a different god.

That is what will be the interesting thing about the Harris game. Eventually, the Harris character will have to step outside the curated world of gameplay and talk to flesh and blood humans, as well as debate Trump. As much as the developers would like to believe the reality they have created has supplanted the old reality, the test of this will be their character leaving the game space for the meat space. The same holds for the lackey with his Elmer Fudd costume and reimagined backstory.

What it will ultimately come down to is whether the voters will prefer the game space reality to the meat space reality. Will they believe the upgraded Harris character is preferable to the meat space Harris and continue to play the game character as a form of escapism or will they experience the meat space version and get turned off by the game itself? That is the central question of this election. This is the first election where people are asked to choose reality versus escapism.

Whither Managerial Polyarchy?

One of the strange truths about democratic governments is that they can remain unpopular for much longer than other forms of government. This seems counterintuitive as the whole point of democratic government is to have public policy reflect the general will of the people. In theory any divergence should be rectified in subsequent elections so that over time, the majority support the policy. As we see in the modern West, this is not how things work in “our democracy.”

There is a great example of this in the UK. Immigrant crime has reached a point where even the most teary-eyed immigration romantic has had enough. All of the polling shows that the majority wants an end to immigration. The new Labour government won power largely by hinting they would be tough on immigration. They were lying, of course, and that is clear now. The government only had about thirty percent support at the election, and you can be sure it is lower now.

In other words, the current rulers of the UK have less popular support than the current ruler of Venezuela. The UK is allegedly a democracy, while the democracies all claim Venezuela is a dictatorship. While technically correct, if we redefine democracy to mean having some sort of voting process, the undeniable fact is the ruling class of Venezuela has far more popular support than the ruling class of the UK. Yet, for now at least, the UK government does not fear being overthrown.

Immigration is a great example of how democracy can remain unpopular for much longer than other forms of government. There has never been a time when there was popular support for open borders and unfettered immigration. The issue may not have ranked high on the list of voter concerns, but there was never a clamoring for violent foreigners to be imported into the country. Now there is massive hostility to it, but the policies not only persist, but they get worse.

Immigration is just the latest example of this. The de-industrialization we saw in the 1970’s and 1980’s never had popular support. People in the emerging service industries or technology may have been indifferent, but there were no rallies in the streets demanding the government ship the car parts plant to Mexico. The people in the manufacturing sector certainly cared, but their interests were ignored because the oligarchs saw a quick buck in selling off the manufacturing base.

The point is the so-called democracies of the West have been unpopular for an exceedingly long time, but it persists due to two factors. One is the people assume they can eventually get what they want through the democratic process. The ballots at every election have two options, heads they win and tails you lose, but people insist on picking from those options. It takes a long while, as we are now seeing, for people to lose faith in the democratic system.

The other reason, and perhaps the main reason, why democratic governments can remain unpopular for so long is the people who run the democratic system grow increasingly convinced they can trick and cajole enough people to manufacture a majority in their favor. In fact, as we keep seeing, this becomes the primary focus of the people running the system. It is as if they seek to prove Lincoln wrong and find a way to fool all of the people all of the time.

The guy running Venezuela knows that a large swath of his population thinks the system is rigged. He certainly knows it is rigged. He also knows that unless he keeps that disgruntled portion of the population pacified, he will be swinging from a tree branch, so that is his primary focus. He needs to always be looking to expand popular support for his policies, while at the same time defusing the anger in the portion that is unhappy with him and his policies.

The glue that has held Western democracies together for so long, despite not being particularly popular, is managerialism. The vast administrative state controlled by a permanent ruling class of managers is an unprecedented defense against any threats to the democratic system. Internal opposition is assimilated into the system so quickly that it never has time to flower into a palace coup. External opposition is subverted through the complex network of government affiliated organizations.

If you look closely, for example, at the pro-government protests in response to the anti-immigration protests in the UK, you will see people wearing the colors of groups like Amnesty International, Hope Not Hate and various immigrant charities right next to the cops waiting to crack the skulls of native Brits. Much of the police action, in fact, is coordinated by these “private groups” who “defend our democracy.” All of them are client organizations of the managerial state.

For this reason, managerial polyarchy¹ is highly resistant to popular discontent, even when that discontent is near universal. The problem though is that it is top-heavy, which makes containing internal dissent increasingly difficult. With so many people inside the managerial system or dependent upon it, factionalism is inevitable. It is why the managerial class has its politicians chant about unifying the country. What they really mean is unifying the managerial elite and the oligarchs.

We see a glimpse of this with Elon Musk. When he bought Twitter and reopened it, the system quickly moved to suppress him. Ben Shapiro and the ADL made him pray at the pile of shoes. The trouble is, Musk is the world’s richest man and someone who does not like being pushed around, so Twitter remains largely open. Musk has now weighed in on the two-tiered justice system of the UK. Elon Musk is a serious problem for a system that thinks it needs complete unity.

Why is Elon Musk a serious problem? A society in which the majority is disgruntled but lacks a leader and a method to compel change is like dry leaves and wood in the underbrush of a forest. It is a forest fire waiting to happen. The disgruntled inside the managerial system may look at the disgruntled masses as an army in waiting and decide it is a good time to stage a palace coup. This is why the British government is one step away from declaring war on running dog deviationists.

In the end, government, regardless of form, must not only satisfy the majority, but pacify those unsatisfied so they will not revolt. The present systems in the West have proven quite resistant to this reality, but reality must always prevail. The crisis in the West is over the central question of managerial polyarchy. Can it adapt and reform itself to comport with the demands of the people over whom it rules? If not, then what happens when these long bottled-up forces finally explode?

¹Managerial Polyarchy refers to the fact that large complex society does not have central control. Instead it has nodes that control specific domains, like banking, the media, the academy, and so on. These are networked together by a common understand of their role in society. This polyarchy of institutions shares the ideology of managerialism, thus we get the term Managerial Polyarchy.

The Beginning Of The End

Note: Behind the green door on the great stone of truth I have a post about the difference between work and exercise, a post about the alienness of the Democratic ticket and the Sunday podcast. Subscribe here or here.

The Nikkei 225 opened the week by plunging 12%, its worst day since the infamous Black Monday in 1987. European markets followed, but due to their controls on the markets ever going too far down, they declined just over two percent. The American markets are expected to open down as well. As with Europe, there are controls in place to prevent the markets from sliding too far too fast. This is determined by the Plunge Protection Team who protect the bankers.

All of this got going last week when markets began to decline and then it was revealed that the world’s most bullish investor, Warren Buffet, was dumping stocks at an unprecedented rate over the last quarter. Berkshire Hathaway dumped 58% of its Apple stock, which has been viewed as a signal that Buffett thinks the American economy is headed for a recession. In lean times, the companies hardest hit are those who make frivolous items like high end mobile devices.

Even setting aside the economic issues, the market was long overdue for a correction, and they often happen around elections. When Trump left office the Dow Jones Industrial Average was around 31,000. It peaked this year at around 40,000, which is roughly a thirty percent climb in three years. If one wants an example of irrational exuberance, there is a perfect example. The American stock market is a speculative bubble that was due to burst.

The speculation mainly rested on the assumption that the Federal Reserve would once again start handing out free money to its friends. The inflation reports had been manipulated to the point where the only people still worried about prices are the people buying things. The jobs reports and GDP numbers have similarly been set to look as if the economy could use a jolt of free money. The trouble is Jerome Powell is not in a rate cutting mood and has made this clear.

The other assumption has been that the American economy is fundamentally sound and all the bad stuff since Covid has been resolved. That has turned out to be wrong, as new bad stuff has emerged since Covid. The new Cold War launched against China and Russia is accelerating changes in the global economy, which is already putting downward pressure on Western economies. It seems that investors are now starting to understand that we are on the cusp of a new world order.

Of course, equities markets are supposed to reflect the general investor sentiment about the underlying economy. You buy a stock because you think the company will be better tomorrow than today. You sell the stock for the opposite reason. The markets are supposed to be about the future of the underlying economy, but that has not been true for close to forty years now. Instead, it has been about where to put all the extra cash the central bank creates in its role as global banker.

What happened to the American stock markets over the last half century is they went from being a place to bet on the economy and individual companies to a place to bet on the Global American Empire being the sole superpower. As long as the dollar remained the global currency and Washington controlled the rules of the global economy, there was only one bet to make. Everyone did the rational think and bet on this not changing, so over time the line went up at a steady pace.

The last two years have revealed this to be old thinking. The sanctions war against Russia has been a disaster for the empire. The Russian economy has outpaced Western economies during this time. Similarly, BRICS, which was just a worthless acronym, has now become a legitimate alternative to the Western model. Their alternative to SWIFT, the default banking transaction system, is slowly emerging as a viable and perhaps superior option for the rest of the world.

The main reason for this is the chaos at the top of the imperial order. While the endless political drama out of Washington entertains the people of the West, to those outside it looks like chaos and instability. The world’s largest economies have no idea who is in charge of imperial policy, as Joe Biden is clearly a vegetable. Further, Washington is not on speaking terms with the two most important countries at the moment. They have Russia and Iran on mute.

What we may be about to see is the canary in the coal mine fall off his perch, thus signaling the great reordering. Western economies evolved over the last half century on the assumption that Washington would control the global money supply. Over the last thirty years the assumption has been that the days of national economies were over, as all economies would be integrated. The rules based global economy using the dollar would be run from the imperial capital.

That is not going to be the future. This presents a massive problem for the West, as industrial policy, economic policy, government policy and demographic policy has all been based on the assumption that the Western managerial elite would sit atop this global system like Mustapha Mond, the world controller in Aldous Huxley’s novel Brave New World. Of course, that is the reason the dream is unraveling, as Mustapha Mond was both corrupt and cynical.

As is usually the case, the great transition will take time. It took forty years for the West to evolve down this cul-de-sac. It will take time for the world to adapt to the decline of the West and for the West to regain itself. The collapse of the Soviet system was followed by two decades of disorder. The difference is the West has further to fall, as the Russians were already poor. Americans are about to get poor because they no longer deserve to be otherwise.

Christianity Versus Democracy

Note: Behind the green door on the great stone of truth I have a post about a good new Western called Old Henry, a post about the Olympics and the Sunday podcast. Subscribe here or here.

A question that does not get asked very much, especially in public, is if Christianity is compatible with democracy. Organized Christians in this age make a point of supporting “democracy” because the people in charge cannot stop talking about it, but that speaks to the sorts of people running organized Christianity. They want to be in good standing with the rulers, an irony that never gets mentioned. The thing they claim to profess evolved in opposition to secular rule.

Putting that aside, the issue of whether democracy, as in the consent of the governed through direct participation in governance by the governed, is compatible with Christianity is an important one. It is clear that as the West has become more democratic, it has become less Christian. Open hostility to Christianity is a feature of the class of people who talk about democracy the most. It certainly seems like the fans of democracy are not fans of Christianity.

Most people today who call themselves Christian or one of the sects of what we think of as Christianity are well aware of the hostility, but they blame secularism or various names for radicalism, rather than democracy. Christians embrace democracy as much as the opponents of Christianity, even if their particular brand of Christianity has no democratic elements. Catholicism, for example, is anti-democratic in structure, but American Catholics love democracy.

There are, however, Christian sects that do embrace democracy. Baptists churches, for example, hire their pastors. If the pastor finds a bigger church willing to hire him and pay him more money, he is free to leave the old church and join the new one. On the other hand, if the church congregation or the deacons decide the pastor is not to the liking they can fire him. Here is a video from a Baptist minister giving the background on why he was recently fired by his church.

The short version of the video is the pastor gave a sermon on marriage and the role of women that was based in a traditional interpretation of Scripture. The wife of the youth pastor, a more modern woman, was offended by the sermon. She and her husband organized a campaign within the church against the pastor in the video and eventually got him fired from his post. In the end, they got a majority of the congregation to agree that either he goes, or they go.

This is a very democratic result. After all, the starting point for democracy is the assertion that the majority must prevail. While there is nothing in Scripture that says this is how things must be, most Christians accept this assertion. In fact, one could argue that the most important victim of majority rule was Christ. If instead of demanding Barabbas they demanded Jesus, the world would be quite different. The point is this congregation and others like it are not organized according to Scripture.

More important, the way they are organized contradicts a basic assumption of all religions, not just Christianity. That basic assumption is that there are some things too important to be left to man. These are things that are true because the gods or God have declared them to be true. Scripture does not say adultery, for example, has to be sorted through a show of hands. For Christians, adultery is a sin, and it is not up for debate

Without knowing the content of the sermon that the pastor in the video says was the source of the conflict, it cannot be judged dogmatically. What matters is the pastor preached in a way that offended the congregation, or at least a majority of them, so the rest went along with firing him. If his sermon was theologically and scripturally correct, then it means the congregation decided they did not like that part of the Bible, so they avoid it and those who preach it.

The point here is that for Christianity to work, or any religion for that matter, the main body of its beliefs must be beyond the collective judgement of man. The collection of oughts and ought nots that make up every religion are rooted in an authority beyond the ability of man to question. Otherwise, the oughts and ought nots are rooted in the collective will of the people. The word we have for this is democracy. In other words, democracy replaces God or the gods as the moral authority.

This is why the radicals of the French Revolution firts set their eyers on the Catholic Church when they gained power. Popular consent could not coexist with an alternative moral authority or its representative on earth, so it had to go. The same logic was at work when they eradicated the aristocracy. Hierarchy is an alternative moral authority to popular sovereignty, so it cannot coexist with it. The thrown and the altar have always been the enemy of popular consent.

You see that in the story of the video pastor. The people who engineered his termination feel justified not because they find support in Scripture, but because they think they have the support of the majority. The God they truly worship is not on the Bible but in the show of hands and their sense of being in the majority. It is not hard to see how this can lead to what you see with the Episcopal Church. It is rainbows and sodomites because the god they worship is the god of democracy.

What the evidence leads to is that the enemy of Christianity is not liberalism or even secularism, but the concept of democracy. Once people of any faith embrace the idea that truth is the result of consent, there is no room for God. Any religion that tries to exist in a society that embraces democracy, will come under pressure to replace its God with the god of the people. As a matter of survival, Christians should see democracy as their primary enemy, externally and internally.

This raises an important question. Can Christianity survive in a democracy. Even if the Church rejects democracy and all its works, can it survive in a society which is governed by the principles of democracy? Is there some limit on the democratic impulse that must be in place and be viewed as unassailable in order for Christian to live in democratic society. If not, then are Christians obligated to fight democracy or simply acquiesce to their own destruction?

DEI Another Day

The ongoing saga over who is actually running the White House and who will be the opponent of Donald Trump in the fall is a good example of how the political class lacks second order thinking. When they bumped off Biden, they did not think about what comes next, so they are now stuck with Harris. It also reveals that these people have no institutional memory, so they repeat past errors. In the case of Harris, they seem to have learned nothing from the Obama experience.

Back during the great interregnum, when issues like race, affirmative action, and demographics could be discussed, it was obvious that the main failure of affirmative action programs was not that they did not result in more blacks in the targeted area, but that the blacks themselves often resented it. Everyone just assumed that these people got where they were through affirmative action, rather than merit, so those who thought they earned it hated the stigma that came with affirmative action.

It is an important and overlooked part of race politics. The white saviors who create and implement these race programs are not counting heads looking for the correct number of brown people. They are looking for salvation. That comes, they assume, when the black recipients of their programs are grateful to the people behind them. The “failure” of affirmative action was that it created black resentment, the exact opposite of what the white saviors were expecting.

That aside, there were second and third order effects that no one thought to consider, and they also contained an internal contradiction that could not be covered up with moral language. You cannot have a meritocratic, egalitarian society and at the same time have special rights for certain people based on dubious claims about the suffering of their ancestors. Good intentions and righteous indignation could not obscure this reality nor stop people from acting on it.

Not only do our betters not think past their first move, but they also never learn from their past errors, so affirmative action was rebranded. Diversity, Equity and Inclusion, no matter how they frame it, is just another set of lectures about how whites must overlook merit in order to fill the ranks with nonwhites. The libraries full of books soaked in emotive language on this topic delight and confuse the promoters of DIE projects, but the fundamental facts remain. It is affirmative action.

This is why people like Christopher Rufo have found it so easy to anathematize the term DEI and use it as a club to beat the managerial class. The fact that this new branding easily converts to DIE made it even easier. When a company CEO proudly states that his company will replace whites with nonwhites in order to meet the goals of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion, in the minds of white people, the “great replacement” move from abstraction to a direct threat.

In other words, the whole DEI program that evolved in response to the moral failure of affirmative action pleased the people behind it, but they never thought about how it would play outside the hothouse of the academy. They never pondered the contradiction between mandatory association and the internal logic of a society that strives to be an egalitarian meritocracy. All they could see was the wonderfulness of their first trick and the assumed ends that must come after it.

This is all coming together with the Kamala Harris campaign. Apparently, not one remembers her 2020 primary run. No one remembers why they carefully groomed and insulated Barak Obama. Instead, they just bumped off Biden and assumed all their dreams would fall into place. Instead, they have the face of DEI as the default option for the Democratic nomination. Kamala Harris is the embodiment of everything the critics of DEI have been saying for a decade.

This is why her polling is terrible, worse than Biden’s, and why she may have to be replaced before the convention. White people see in Kamala Harris the face behind those dreadful diversity seminars at the office. Black people see the patronizing white women behind those same programs. For both races, Harris is what middle-aged cat ladies imagine is the ideal black woman. It is not that she is inauthentic, which is certainly true, but that she is genuinely offensive.

Of course, the people who created this mess are now tasked with finding a remedy to it, which means more obtuse shortsightedness. Reportedly the Obama faction is unhappy with Harris, a member of the Clinton faction, so they are floating the idea of Senator Mark Kelly as her running mate. The problem there is it underscores the fact that Harris is a DEI candidate. Fitting her with a competent white man not only highlights her ineptitude, but confirms what critics say about DEI.

This is why there is a good chance that this scheme falls apart entirely and the Democrats are left with a chaotic scramble at their convention. The thing they hoped to avoid would be made possible by their thumbless attempts to engineer a result that prevents an open convention. They keep stepping on these rakes, because they never think past the first move, and they learn nothing from past errors. The Democrats are now a collection of high time preference amnesiacs.

All of this brings up a larger issue, one that will not go away when this present fiasco has gone down the memory hole. Popular government can only work in an orderly society, and you get an orderly society when the people who make up that society agree that following the rules is of paramount importance. This is not possible in a diverse society, which must devolve into tribal factionalism. This is why the Framers warned about the threat of factionalism to the republic.

The ongoing demographic collapse of America, and the West in general, means the underlying requirement of Western style government is collapsing. The chaotic, big man government we see evolving with the Democrats is simply a product of the people who make up that party’s coalition. In time, this will be the reality of American society, if the demographic trends continue. The real choice behind these election dramas is between order and diversity. You cannot have both.

The Ukraine Calendar

Lost in the firehose of events this past month is the fact that there is a race against the clock going with regards to the Ukraine war. In fact, the decision to force Biden out of the race may have been tied to what is happening with Ukraine. The war that has become the defining feature of Joe Biden’s tenure is heading for a finale, but the timing of that final is unclear. The shape of the finale is what has Europe’s political class pacing the floors while following events in Washington.

The most important fact on the ground is that the Russians are steadily advancing across the entire front, with the exception of the south. The Russians have not gone on the offensive in that area for some reason, but that could be changing. There are reports of increased activity along that part of the front. Everywhere else, the Russian army is slowly and methodically grinding up the Ukrainian army and slowly advancing one village and stronghold at a time.

Since the summer of 2022, the goal of the Russians has been to limit their losses while maximizing Ukrainian losses, even if it meant not advancing along the front. One of the primary demands by the Russians before the war started was the demilitarization of Ukraine and now that is a primary goal of the war. Every day Russian drones circle over the front looking for men and equipment to destroy. As a result, the Ukraine army has been taking a steady beating for eighteen months.

As things stand, the Ukrainians have three main problems. The big one is they have no defense to Russian glide bombs. This means the Ukrainians cannot maneuver to counter Russian advances. As soon as they are spotted, a fifteen-hundred-pound bomb lands on their position. The second problem is the Russians are about to split the front, thus cutting the Ukraine army in two. This brings up the third problem which is the inability of Ukraine to coordinate across the front.

An army that cannot move, cannot defend itself against the enemy and cannot coordinate between its units is a sitting duck. The Ukrainian soldiers are tenacious and fearsome fighters, but they are now in an impossible position. Morale is becoming a serious problem as reality sets in on the troops. Insubordination is increasing and that means the military leaders have another constraint. Their soldiers now often refuse to go on the attack or defend their positions.

What the Russians ultimately want is for Zelensky or his successor to sign an agreement ceding the Russian speaking areas, Crimea, and whatever lands the Russians think will compensate them for the war. They also want Ukraine to agree to the other demands regarding demilitarization and plots to join NATO. The Russians think that if Ukraine signs a deal, Washington will have to recognize it. That may be a dream but that is what they are thinking.

That is the first deadline. The people running the Biden administration do not want this to happen under circumstances, much less before the autumn. Now that Biden is out of the picture, the goal is to set things up so Russia hawks infiltrate and subvert any efforts by the Harris team. Of course, if Harris proves to be too ridiculous even for the vote rigging schemes, then putting this tar baby in the lap of Trump is the goal and that means Ukraine holding on until January.

Sensing the clock is running out on him, Zelensky is now making noises about sitting down with the Russians. What he seems to understand is that if Trump wins, the Russians can dictate whatever terms they like to Ukraine. The reason for that is Trump is not only uninterested in continuing the war, but he remembers how Zelensky helped the Democrats impeach him. It is better to cut a deal before Trump wins the election than after, as Zelensky will then have no leverage.

There is another angle here for Zelensky. The so-called nationalists understand they are dead if Zelensky cuts a deal with Russia. Their only path to survival is the war continuing and then maybe devolving into a guerilla war. Of course, Zelensky understands this too. He has to decide if he must first order his army to move on these nationalist units, before or after he starts talks with Russia. His life literally depends on timing this out exactly right.

Of course, the Russians understand this as well. They most likely expect Zelensky to talk about a deal, maybe even start talking with the Russians, but not commit to anything, until it is clear which way the election will go. What is unclear is whether the Russians want Zelensky to sign the final deal or his successor. They may roll the dice and wait until the election, figuring either result is fine. Regardless, they now have time on their side so they can keep doing what they have been doing.

The other player in this drama is Europe. The European political class has bet everything on the Ukraine war. Now they face the prospect of Trump returning to power and then pulling the plug on Project Ukraine. Like Zelensky, they have to worry that Trump did not forget that European intel agencies helped his political enemies plot against him during his first term. Regardless, they now are in a race against the clock to “Trump proof” NATO regarding Project Ukraine.

The trouble with all of this, however, is the war may end much faster than anyone is expecting, except maybe the Russians. Most of Ukraine now has electric for only a few hours a day. This means the urban centers have water a few hours a day. It also means the no food that requires refrigeration. Of course, this makes the distribution of essentials nearly impossible in major cities. The constant pressure of the war could bring about a civilian collapse at any time.

The interesting and ironic aspect to all of this is the two players in this game with time on their side are Trump and Putin. Trump is under no pressure at all with regards to Ukraine, as he has no stake in it. Putin, of course, is now holding most of the cards, so he can wait until the others show their hands. Proof that the universe has a sense of humor will be that the two winners in Project Ukraine will be the two guys linked by the creators of project Ukraine in the Russian collusion hoax.

Weekend At Biden’s

Going back to when the regime selected Joe Biden to “win” the Democratic primary and then “win” the general election, there have been jokes about his health, making references to the movie Weekend At Bernie’s. Just about every way to call someone a corpse has been used to describe Joe Biden. In what could be final proof that we do live in a simulation, Joe Biden is now hiding out, incommunicado, at his beach house in Delaware, supposedly suffering from Covid.

Now, he is not entirely cut off from the world. He supposedly wrote that letter, a scan of which was posted on Twitter, now stupidly called X, in which he bowed out of the presidential race. Someone who sort of sounded like Biden supposedly “called” the Harris campaign to pledge support. Amusingly or alarmingly, depending upon your point of view, Harris flubbed her lines and started to say it was a recording, but then caught herself and played along until the end.

Now, the letter Biden allegedly wrote is a huge problem for a number of reasons, not the least of which is we have no idea who wrote it. The official version is his longtime friend “helped” him write it, but then why was it not on White House letterhead or even the letterhead of the campaign? Why does the signature look like it was written by another person or possibly generated using Microsoft Paint? Resigning by scanned letter posted on social media is also bizarre.

What the letter suggests is that Biden is either dead or in a coma or maybe in and out of it mentally, so people around him wrote the letter to distract people. If they had not posted this letter on Sunday, there would be media camped out in Delaware doing what they have been told to do, which is hound Biden out of the race. The letter was to shift the focus from Biden onto Harris. The trouble is, everyone in Washington seems to understand this so they started calling for proof of life.

That explains the bizarre show they put on yesterday. The whole thing looked like a poorly done high school play. Of course, faking a voice is now quite simple thanks to the explosion of cheap software tools. Someone with free time was able to make this video that looks fairly good but sounds even better. A professional with the right equipment would be able to create a fake Joe Biden recording that would fool even his family, so it is well within the realm of the possible.

In fact, all of this fakery is well within the realm of the parsimonious. A good rule of life is that people who have lied to you everyday up to this point are probably lying to you now and will continue to lie to you in the future. Everything about the Biden campaign, presidency and re-election campaign has been a lie, so it is wise to assume that what is happening with him right now is a lie too. What we can assume at this point is the official version of events is false.

Of course, the counter to this is why would they do this? The whole point of the lies to this point was to keep him in the race so the vote-rigging machine could get him re-elected and his team could carry on for another term. If he is unable to fill that duty, then why not finish him off and rally around Harris? It is not as if she is a genius who will outwit these people and install her own regime. Even in his vegetative state, Joe Biden is smarter than Kamala Harris.

Therein lies the mystery. One clue to all of this is that Harris was never part of the Obama crime family. When she ran in 2020, her staff was composed of former Clinton people, not Obama people. Amusingly, it is just assumed that because she is not white that she is in the Obama crime family. This is not the case at all, and it is why the Biden people dunked on her to the media. Putting Harris in the White House would be bad for the Biden-Obama people who are running things.

That raises another question. Why are the people around the dead or comatose Biden saying he endorses Harris? One reason is it would look even weirder than any of this stuff looks if he did not endorse her. That and an open primary could result in violent street battles in Chicago. Both parties remain haunted by the 1968 Democratic convention in Chicago, but especially the Democrats. Even a mild version of that would sink the party up and down the ticket.

The other reason is that there seems to be a consensus that Harris is simply too stupid and obnoxious to win. From the perspective of the Obama crime family, Harris running a shabby campaign and losing to Orange Hitler would put an end to the Clinton crime family as a viable force in Washington. In another of life’s amusing ironies, the Clinton wing is now seen as the old white leadership, while the Obama wing is the new, diverse and ascendent leadership of the party.

The main problem with all of this is that at some point, Biden will have to either make an appearance or be replaced by Harris for the remainder of his term. At least that is what the normal rules would dictate. We live in a bizarre age, so it is possible that the regime media simply refuses to discuss the fact that the president has not been seen for however long it takes to pull off this caper. They are not all that curious at the moment when the topic is at the center of the public stage.

It is an example of the lack of second order thinking. The people around Biden are like conmen who lie to get out of a jam, but each lie creates a new jam, for which they have to come up with another lie. The result is they get carried along by their river of lies without any concept of where it leads. That has been the history of the Biden presidency thus far. In this case, they cannot figure out what lie to tell now, so they remain under the cone of silence.

What we know now is Biden is either too dead or too sick to meet with the Lizard King’s chief emissary on earth. If he cannot make that meeting, then it is safe to assume he is too sick or dead to do much of anything. This raises the obvious question of who is making decisions in his name. You can get away with this for a week, but any longer than that is too absurd even in our clown times. Sometime soon, Biden must make an appearance or step down from office.
