There is plenty of talk about the demographic changes happening in America, but not much thought about where it is headed. Some people mention the fact that the country will be majority-minority in a generation, but no one likes to think about that so that is as far as it ever gets. The people in charge seem to think America will be Brazil but without the favellas and kidnapping industry.

The fact is the social and political structures that have defined America cannot survive the demographic changes that are coming fast. The main reason for that is the majority population, once it becomes just another minority population, cannot continue to think like a majority population. The majority will no longer be able to swap the good of the whole for the good of their group.

Everything about America is the result of the majority population swapping their interest for the interest of the country. This altruism works only when the interests of the country are seen to align with the interest of the dominant majority, which is a thing that comes naturally when the majority is near ninety percent. Once that majority shrinks down to nearly fifty percent this perception collapses.

This is what we see happening all around us. The majority looks around and see nothing but angry minorities, both unhappy with their position in society and totally unwilling to sacrifice anything for the good of the whole. The campus protests, for example, are just another sign that we have reached the tragedy of the commons phase of the demographic collapse of the white majority.

That is the show this week. It is a rumination on how majorities naturally see themselves and how minorities naturally see themselves. Democracy can only work in a majoritarian society. Once a democratic society devolves into a majority-minority society, minoritarianism takes over and democracy is no longer possible. What comes next is from a set of choices most do not relish.

It may not seem like it at the moment, but it is a good chance that we are witnessing the twilight of the neocons. For half a century they have dominated the conservative movement and the Republican Party. They ran both into the ground in the Bush years and then abandoned ship when Trump came along. They found a purchase in the Biden administration, but that will not be long lived.

At some point, the sober minded in both parties will come to see the neocons as a cancer that must be removed as a matter of survival. That and it is clear the neocon subculture is lacking in talent. The second generation has proven to be quite stupid, and the next generation makes Ocasio-Cortez look like a scholar. It is shirt sleeves to shirt sleeves in three generations for the neocons.

Even so, it is important to understand how this deranged cult of people managed to gain so much power in the 20th century. Lots of people have grand ideas about where to go from here, but none of them can be taken seriously unless they incorporate an understanding for how we got here. There are important lessons for contemporary politics in the story of the neocons.

It is a primer on the events that made the environment that spawned the neoconservative movement and how this collection of neurotic losers managed to rise to the top of the political order. Neoconservatism is a uniquely American phenomenon that speaks to the uniquely American problems we will face in the demographic age.

For as long as anyone can recall, the offer from the American political system to the typical white person was a choice between a party that wants to harm you and your interests or a party that will work to prevent it. It was never explicitly stated this way, but it was always the subtext to Republican Party marketing. Vote Republican or risk being subjected to the tender mercies of the Democrats.

Note that the Democratic Party did not market itself this way. They did make wild claims about the Republicans wanting to do things like bring back slavery or roll back women’s rights, but they were always couched in the assertion that the Democrats were going to advance the goals of their supporters. The choice was between progress and regress, never stasis as with the Republican messaging.

Since the end of the Cold War, this dynamic has become grotesque. The Democrat Party invents increasing bizarre goals it seeks to achieve, things like letting men in dresses chase your kids around the park, while the Republican messaging has become feebler and more subservient. Republican messaging has been reduced to “Vote for us so the man in the dress chasing your kids is not a racist.”

It is clear that the people in the white working and middle class no longer have any options at the ballot box save for one. That option is to abandon the party that claims to represent their interest and thus abandon a system that mocks the very notion of representative government. Zeroing out the Republican side of the equation is the only way to break the cycle of madness.

That is the show this week. A big part of it is about how the system works and why there is no voting your way to a better result. The two parties, in collusion with the donor class, have rigged the game in such a way that voting no longer matters, other than to confirm to the parties that the rubes continue to be fooled. Negating that last part may be the only peaceful way of initiating a reform cycle.

Toiling in the fields yesterday, it occurred to me that this weekend may be the last time I get to hang out with the great John Derbyshire. The only public events he does these days are VDare events and this may be the final one of those due to the lawfare they have suffered through for the last few years. John is also nearing the time when retirement is on the agenda.

Oddly, Derb does not get much credit for being the first right-wing podcaster way back in the before times. When he was at National Review, he started doing his show and it was a novelty at the time. After a while, many others got into the game, often copying the style used by Derb. The “review of and comment upon the news” podcast format remains a staple of the podcast ecosystem.

You can also credit Derb for coining the term “dissident right” back around the same time he launched his podcast. The concept was largely in response to the nutty neocon-evangelical conservatism of the Bushies. Unlike Gottfried’s “alternative right”, the dissident right started from empirical truths about the human condition. Dissident right has outlived alternative right, at least for now.

We spend a lot of time thinking about what went wrong and who is responsible for what went wrong, but it is good to think about what went right too. One thing that prevents the dispossessed from falling into despair is the network of dissident audio content that reminds us that we are not alone. The show this week is a tribute, in the tribute band sort of way, to the guy who kicked off the dissident podcast space.

One of the unremarked things that has happened over the past ten years is the collapse of the so-called man-o-sphere. There may be people still working that land, but all the big names have moved on or disappeared. The pickup artist have all disappeared from the internet entirely. That whole scene just seems to have folded up and gone the way of the dinosaur without anyone noticing.

One reason is the demographic aged out of the material. A guy like Heartiste, for example, could do the pickup artist stuff when he was early middle-age, but once you hit fifty you become a skeevy weirdo, not a Don Juan. The same holds for the other subcultures in that space. Once you reach middle-age, it all starts to sound a bit weird and pointless, even to the people making money off it.

There is another aspect to it. That whole scene was a reaction to the feminization of the culture starting with second wave feminism. The next generation of males have no frame of reference in which to have a reaction. The typical Zoomer has been raised in the longhouse, to use the cool kid’s term. He has no way of knowing that all of this is both weird and unnatural.

That is the point of the show. The male role is not a slippery concept that changes from one generation to the next. It has been revolutionized and pulverized over the last few decades, but that is what makes this age anomalous. The male role in society is timeless, at least in the Western world. There are certain immutable characteristic to being a man that will reassert themselves in the coming years.

On the Sunday show I said I was swearing off any Trump news until the summer, as there is only so much screeching and squealing, I can take. I needed to take a break in order to train for the coming election. I plan to stick to that for the most part but looking at the clips of Trump stopping into a Chick-fil-A and the reaction to it, I thought it may be a good time to talk about the meaning of Trump.

Almost ten years ago now Trump entered the political arena, and nothing has been the same since, which is a remarkable thing by itself. If upon the elevation of Barak Obama to the presidency you had said that the reaction to this event will be Donald Trump swinging a wrecking ball through Washington and our politics, people would have assumed you had lost your mind.

Nonetheless, here we are, and that wrecking ball is about to take what will probably be its last swing through the system. I remain skeptical about Trump’s chances of winning in November, but I did not think he would make it this long. The reason is our managerial class hates what the man represents to the point where they have come to define themselves by that hatred.

That is the point of the show this week. I pulled together the various points about this I have made over the years, as to why they hate Trump. When you realize that Trump is a symptom, this last decade becomes a useful way of understanding not only the hysteria around Trump but why things are such a mess in general. Trump is the scourge sent by the gods to punish the managerial class.

An aspect of our increasingly ideological age is the things that used to be a part of the culture that have been removed by force or by neglect. The parts pried loose and discarded are easy to see, as they come with an angry mob of deranged lunatics there to do the damage. The bits that are just forgotten and fall out of the shared reality that is our culture are the things missed only by those who remember them.

The opening of the show today is one of those bits that has fallen out of shared reality mostly due to neglect. When I was a young person, you had to read Thoreau and Emerson, so you could learn about transcendentalism. Speaking with younger people recently it seems that stopped happening at some point. The old hippie teachers gave way to activists who have no interest in those old white men.

Transcendentalism is a peculiarity of America that not only influenced what became progressivism but also its traveling partner conservatism. You could probably draw a line from Thoreau and Emerson to the weird secular Gnosticism that emerged in the aftermath of the Cold War. Modern progressive rejects individualism, but they embrace the idea of society corrupting the natural goodness of man.

Another line you could draw is from the second wave transcendentalists, who were mostly bourgeois aesthetes, to the middle-class managerial elite of today. Rather than rejecting empiricism, like the first wave transcendentalist, the second wave embraced it but in the context of individual expression. In other words, they loved science as long as it supported their emotional claims.

As nutty as they were, the transcendentalists represented an aspect of American culture that remains with us today. There are hints of it in the parallel society movement and the trad-life stuff that is popular with some young right-wing people. The desire to break free of the corrupting aspects of modern society in order to have an authentic life is something that the transcendentalist would have understood.

It is appropriate that on this Good Friday I have carried your questions up the hill to my studio and answered them in the podcast. Lots of good ones this time. No questions about Easter, which was not a surprise, as I do not do a lot on religion. Putting the show together, it occurred to me that we will soon see a push to remove Good Friday from the federal calendar of holidays.

Easter has already been greatly minimized. When I was a kid, spring break was always before or after Easter. The schools did an Easter show where the little kids were dressed up in silly outfits to entertain the parents. We also made Easter baskets and colored eggs in school, which is banned now. I think the Easter basket tradition has pretty much gone away entirely at this point.

The current war on the phrase “Christ is King” is a no doubt the first shots in the coming war on the remains of public Christianity. If they manage to make public professions of Christian faith “antisemitic” then it will not be long before Republican governors are banning all displays of Christianity in the public square. It may sound crazy, but most of what is normal today was lunacy just a few years ago.

For now, at least, I hope everyone has a blessed Good Friday and Easter weekend with your friends and family. For the Orthodox readers, you will have to wait another month this year, but that is how it goes some years. Catholics, of course, will be saying a special thanks for the Episcopal Church. It is a reminder that no matter how terrible things have gotten for Catholics, it can always get worse.

Intellectual history is generally the study of good ideas or what we currently think are good ideas, but it is the bad ideas that have the most impact. The use of slave labor in the New World, for example, seemed like a good idea at the time but has proven to be a terrible burden on us. If the slavers knew that their descendants would be tormented by the consequences of slavery, would they still have done it?

Of course, the life of a bad idea is the result of the people choosing to embrace the bad idea, often when it is obviously a bad idea. Much of what Marx had to say about economics, even in the context of his age, was obvious nonsense. Further, people knew enough about the human condition to know that communism could never possibly work, but intellectuals chose to embrace it anyway.

Put another way, stupid ideas need a special sort of stupid person. Orwell famously wrote, “One has to belong to the intelligentsia to believe things like that; no ordinary man could be such a fool.” Orwell was addressing the educated opinion in England at the time that Germany would win the war. The basic concept is something of a universal, as we see today with our “expert” class.

Even so, ideas matter and this age is haunted by bad ideas that should have been relegated to the dustbin of history. That is the show this week. It is a breezy survey of some of the bad ideas that still vex us. It is not intended to be an exhaustive list, but the things that came to mind when I cooked up the idea for a show.
