Managerial Polyarchy

One of the on again, off again debates on this side of the divide is about what to call the current system and how we got to this point. The old language is either inadequate or loaded with moral connotations. Calling the Biden people fascist is not entirely wrong, but not entirely accurate either. That and the word fascist comes with so much baggage that its descriptive value is completely lost.

The same can be said for words like communist and authoritarian. Even the term managerialism has been abused to the point where it often just means “bad” rather than a specific sort of organizational outlook. One of the weird parts about being trapped in the 20th century, as is the case with the West, is we are left to use moral language that no longer works in this century.

The term “Biological Leninism” is a good example. While the NRx people have accurately described some aspects of the current system, this is mostly an accident of trying to jam the current system into old models. The term itself is just a way to anathematize the current ideology by associating it with an ideology of the last century which is universally reviled.

What needs doing is a fresh look at the 20th century from an objective, historical perspective that avoids the old moral language. How did liberal democracy evolve into this strange elite ideology? Clearly, we no longer live in liberal democracies and our ruling classes no longer subscribe to the morality of liberal democracy. The question is, what is this ideology and how did it evolve?

Reading The Kagan Cult

One of the things that is being underscored by the war against Russia is the isolation and insularity of the political class. They live in a tightly controlled narrative structure in which all of their information is filtered by the fulltime and permanent policy making class that controls the official narratives. The readings in the show this week are intended to show how that narrative structure is built.

It is a good example of how managerialism works in practice. There is real information about what is happening on the battlefield. The American military has men on the ground observing the Ukraine army. They have men in Kiev working with the political and military control systems. These people feed information back to Washington within their respective chain of command.

That information does not get to the politicians. Instead, the top people in the various agencies decide what will end up in official briefings. They work with the semi-permanent foreign policy community, controlled by the Kagan cult, to decide what gets transmitted to the political class. It gets transmitted via direct briefing, through aides and advisors or through the media.

Mostly what the politicians get is a moral framework. You see this in these pieces in the show, especially the first one. With regards to Ukraine, the managerial class has provided a moral framework for the politicians and then provided them safe options within that framework. Various politicians are then given information to argue their preferred position within that framework.

Most everyone has wondered why no one in Washington asks the obvious questions about the issues of the day. The reason is, they live in a simulation of reality so that what is obvious to you is not obvious to them. A few long serving insiders in leadership will have some access to the truth, but that is only because they have been around so long their handlers know they will not stray from the script.

Civilizationalism

Thirty years ago two competing theories about what comes next emerged from the end of the Cold War. One was the end of history thesis by Francis Fukuyama and the other was the clash of civilizations thesis by Samuel Huntington. The former carried the day, but it is the latter that is proving to be closer to reality. Even so, it is the Fukuyama thesis that continues to animate Western thought.

Reality is the thing that does not go away when you stop believing in it and reality is telling us that Huntington was the better thesis. He got some things wrong about what comes next, but his general thesis is proving correct. The new global order that is emerging is based in civilizational identity. In a way, the world is returning to its natural state after the long fever of the 20th century.

The exception, at least for now, is the West, but it does provide some clue as to what will happen in the West. The new diverse societies being created will have to be organized around something. The civilizational idea allows for the native population to impose their will on the guest populations. It also allows the natives to defend their ways at whatever cost is required.

The Shape Of Things To Come

Someone posted in the comments a link to an Ed Dutton post at VDare that got me thinking about a subject I touch on from time to time. That is, what kind of society will be possible with the history and human capital that will be available to us in the glorious time after this age? Whatever it is will not be like what was done in the past, simply because the material will be vastly different.

All discourse on what passes for the Right tends toward some version of “all we need to do is return to…” What ends the sentence is an idealized version of one of the big three ideologies of the past. Alternatively, people will offer up a vision of the future without mentioning how we get there from here. White nationalism, for example, suffers from the same problem as libertarianism. It exists only as an idea.

This is a problem with politics that we inherited from the Enlightenment, which is to assume you can start with a clean sheet of paper when it comes to politics. In every other area of life, problem solving begins with an assessment of the material at hand and the minimum requirements of the project. This is, in fact, how human society evolves, despite the claims of political philosophy.

This means that the place to start when thinking about the politics of the future is the material that will be available in the future. If the Western order does crumble, as it seems to be doing, then the question is not what will replace the current system but what can replace it. That means taking stock of what the population will look like demographically and spiritually.

The Egalitarianism Curse

It is impossible to overstate the impact that the concept of equality has had on the Western world, especially in the last century. In the fullness of time, the American experiment may be recast as the radical egalitarian experiment. Like the Covid virus, it escaped the lab and spread around the world. It also has had its greatest impact on the West, which may not survive it.

It is tempting to lay the blame at the feet of Jesus. After all, the great preachers of egalitarianism start with the idea of spiritual or moral equality, even if they explicitly hate the baby Jesus. If all men are equal in the eyes of God, then it must follow that all men should be equal in the eyes of one another. Since they are clearly not equal in reality, there must be something wrong with human society.

This is not true, of course. One does not logically follow the other, but the hallmark of Western thought since the late Middle Ages is the error of assuming that observations about nature or nature’s god lead to rules about human behavior. For most of Church history this was understood, but then philosophers took over from theologians and the virus of egalitarianism escaped the lab.

In our time, egalitarianism has worked like an acid, dissolving all of the organic institutions of society. The churches are overrun by degenerates. Civic organizations are either crippled by laws requiring the inclusion of everyone or they have been transformed into weapons in service to egalitarian ideals. Political opposition has been made into an enabling operation that confirms the prevailing orthodoxy.

That means any genuine opposition to the prevailing order starts with a rejection of the universal equality of man business. Whether one looks to Scripture, biology or some ideological or theological movement, the only real opposition to the prevailing orthodoxy starts with the acceptance of human diversity. People are not equal and therefore groups of people can never be equal to other groups of people.

Farewell Pat Buchanan

Last week I mentioned the retirement of Pat Buchanan and a few people suggested doing a show on the man. He looms large for people on this side the great divide who were around when he ran in 1992. For younger people on this side he probably does not resonate the same way, simply because you had to be alive back in the 1980’s and 1990’s to appreciate the full impact of the event.

The thing is though, even if you were around then, you did not appreciate what was happening until much later. Trump’s run in 2016 is what brought it home. Then the monstrous assault on Trump and his administration reminded some of us of what happened to Buchanan but also the paleos. The ugly face of the people behind the last thirty years of American politics came into focus.

When you dive into Buchanan’s career, you appreciate why the paleos lost, but also why they were never willing to take the next step. They grew up in an America that was about as close as you get to the ideal of America. It was a country that prospered because it was a system that worked. It was not perfect, of course, but it was about as good as anyone could expect.

Buchanan’s career, starting in the 1960’s, was about trying to get back to the system which produced the glory years of the 50’s and 60’s. What made his run in 1992 possible was the flicker of renewal in the 1980’s. For his generation, that time must have felt like a turning point in the great return. Then they saw the scaly tentacles of the neocons wrapped around it.

Digging into Buchanan’s career, prepping for the show, I came to appreciate why guys like Jared Taylor stop short of criticizing the system itself or why Steve Sailer pines for a return to his salad days in California. People who recall good America do not have to think about an alternative to the present. They lived in one. I do not think we can return to it, but I appreciate why they would desire it.

Ukraine On The Brain

The show this week is mostly about Ukraine, but I did have a few minutes to mention the retirement of Pat Buchanan. In retrospect I should have done the whole show on him, as he is turning out to be the central figure of dissident politics. His valiant revolt against the Republican Party and the conservative movement made it possible for there to be a dissident movement.

Buchanan is an example of necessary failure. His campaigns against the neocons did nothing to change the trajectory of the party or the managerial elite, but that is what many needed to see in order to truly understand the problem. Buchanan was an inflexion point for many of us at the time. Talk to dissidents of my generation and most will point to that time as when they started their journey.

Before 1992, all but a few paleos thought it was possible to work the system as it was advertised in order to change public policy. After 1992 many started to understand why Sam Francis had been right back in the 1980’s when he said that it was impossible to maintain conservative polices or politics within a democracy. You either acquiesce to democracy or you are rejected by it. Buchanan was the test case.

The thing about Brother Pat is he was the right sort of martyr. Lots of people get chewed up by the system, but they tend to use their failure as a reason to throw a pity party for themselves. In small ways they signal that they would be willing to compromise in order to be allowed back into the party. Their ego and pride means more to them than the role that is laid out for them as a martyr to the cause.

Buchanan never did that. He understood the role he was playing and he played it as well as his talents permitted. You always got the sense that he understood that he would never see the new dawn, but that he knew that he may see the signs of it before his days were done. The Good Lord saw fit to grant the man that one small favor in the form of the Trump phenomenon.

Thank you Brother Pat

The Secret Police

Ten years ago, if you asked people if the government was involved in manipulating public opinion or leaning on social media companies or spying on presidential candidates, very few people would have agreed. Those who did think this was the case were branded conspiracy theorists. Today, most people just seem to accept that this is now the way things are done in our democracy.

It is hard to know if this is really the case, but the lack of public outrage over the stream of revelations about government pressure on social media companies suggests people are not surprised by it. Maybe most people are still processing it, as no one was raised to think they lived in a police state. Possibly the lack of mainstream coverage lets the public ignore what they would prefer not to face.

When you look back at the last time the public learned they were secretly being manipulated and spied upon by the secret police, the reaction of today feels like capitulation in comparison to how people reacted fifty years ago. Back then, both parties and the media were outraged at the abuses, even though many in both parties and the media were parties to the corruption.

This new version of the Church Committee that the Republican House is planning is sure to turn into a circus. The reason is the Democrats will go out of their way to make it as ridiculous as possible. They will appoint their craziest members to be on the committee investigating the secret police. The media will be tasked with discrediting the whole thing as an assault on our democracy!

Of course, we can now see that the original Church Committee was a show to placate the public and did nothing to limit the secret police. When you look at the programs that were revealed during that time, you see that they never actually ended. They just became part of the standard operating procedure. In fact, the secret police are far more invasive and abusive now than at anytime in its existence.

Even so, it is a good comparison. Fifty years ago, the people in charge felt it necessary to convince the public that they had reined in their secret police. Today they think it is funny that the secret police are manipulating the media, pressuring social media companies and harassing citizens over their opinions. It either means they no longer think they need to maintain the lie or they are unable to do it.

That last part cannot be discounted. Go back and look at the people running the secret police in the middle of the last century and then compare them to the cast of characters we see today. Those old guys look like giants in comparison. Fifty years ago, a mentally unstable man like John Brennan would not have been allowed on the property. Maybe the current crew simply lacks the talent to maintain the façade.

Alternatively, maybe the lesson the secret police learned from the Church Committee is that they need better control of the politicians. The reason they are so brazen today is they know they have nothing to fear from Congress. If they can raid the villa of a former president, what can they do to a pesky congressman. Perhaps like the Praetorian Guards, the secret police have assumed control of the system.

A Ukraine Primer

Now that we are starting to get some clarity on how the military situation in Ukraine is going to play out this year, it is a good time to contextualize the war, which means understanding the politics of it. The only way to understand this war is to understand the people responsible for it and the people responsible for this war and the many other wars since 1990 are the neoconservatives.

It is a bit ironic that this bizarre cult may meet its end in the place where their ancestors got their start. Most of the neocons from the middle of the last century were from parents who emigrated from places like Galicia, which is currently part of Ukraine, but was part of the Russian empire a century ago. That part of the world has produced far more than its share of troublemakers.

Stefan Bandera was from Galicia. He is the inspirational leader of current Ukrainian nationalists, like the Azov battalion, which have been fighting Russian militias in the Donbas since the coup in 2014. Interestingly, many prominent Bolsheviks were from this part of the world as well. Of course, many of the most important neocons came from that part of the world as well.

It would be nice if 2023 brought some attention to this bizarre cult of fanatics responsible for this Ukraine disaster, but these people are better at avoiding sunlight than they are at starting monstrous wars. People like Robert Kagan and Victoria Nuland should be brought center stage and explained to the public. They are responsible for death and carnage that would make a certain Austrian blush.

The show this week is a primer on these people and their machinations over the last thirty years with regards to Russia. It looks like this long bloody history will come to a head this year, which means the official narrative will collapse. It also means the nationalist narratives will fall apart as well. The Ukraine war is about imperialism, but not the sort of imperialism they imagine.

Random News Items

I had to record the show on Wednesday evening as I had things to do on Thursday, so I was left to guess about the Kevin McCarthy drama. My guess from the start was that this would go on for as long the sides had breath in their lungs, because it has nothing to do with issues and everything to do with personality. Those opposed to McCarthy simply detest the man for who he is and that is not changing.

What is remarkable about this is how willing the rest of the party is to tell their voters how much they detest them. By supporting this bozo, they are giving the finger to their voters in the most obvious way. The angry one-eyed dwarf calling the holdouts “terrorists” is why people are sick of the Republican Party. The party of John McCain is the main reason for the present crisis.

This has been an unexpected boost to our side to start the year. The goofballs in conservative media have taken this opportunity to remind everyone that they are just as loathsome as the party they support. Here we have some of the Fox News actors calling the hold outs insurrectionists. Then they had Anthony Weiner’s best bud attack Lauren Boebert in a live interview. Hilarious.

The best part about this is the party has an easy way out of this jam. They could dump McCarthy and find someone that is not hated, but instead they are rallying around the establishment flag. Even better is that whatever deal they eventually cut with the holdouts will be immediately broken. The party of finks will figure out a way to fink on themselves in the finkiest way possible.
