The show this week was going to be about the religious underpinnings of what I call the New Religion of the ruling class, but as I was doing it other things came to mind, so it is more of a survey of the antecedents. In retrospect I probably should rework the show around that idea, but that will have to be another show. As a result, this show is more of a thinking aloud about the roots of social justice.

The odd thing to me is the resistance I see to using the word “religion” to label this mode of thought that dominates the ruling class. The behavior of the managerial class ticks the boxes for a theocratic mindset. The only thing missing is a well-defined god, but all the other behavior mimics religious fervor. If you replace God with “arc of history” the puzzle is complete, as far as a religion.

There seems to be two camps that oppose the religion idea. One camp are Christians who think a religion must have all the things in their form of Christianity, which means most of Christianity is a false religion. The other camp is those who cannot move past the idea that people are motivated by something other than money. In both cases the opposition is about their own needs and desires.

Regardless, there is a case to be made that what we are seeing is religious instinct flowing through an ideology. At the end of the show, I get into this a little bit with the post-Marx culturalism stuff. I think the best cause and effect argument, however, is the Social Gospel Movement through Progressivism to the current woke stuff. That strikes me as a solid evolutionary arc. Maybe that can be a future show.

To the Western ear, the phrase “closed society” brings to mind hermit kingdoms like North Korea or totalitarian societies like the old Soviet Union. That is because the ideology of the American empire is the open society. The open society is tolerant and open to minorities while the closed society is intolerant. The former is always good while the latter is always bad, very very bad.

The open society is not the norm for human organization. In fact, the very idea of human organization requires both discrimination and intolerance. All human organizations must have rules to determine who is outside the group, who is inside the group and how this is enforced. An organization where anyone can come or go as they please is just an ad hoc mob, not an organization.

Therein lies the debilitating contradiction in the open society. If the goal is a society where all opinions are tolerated and given a fair hearing, it means tolerating ideas that run counter to the open society ideal. This is where Karl Popper’s famous phrase, “the paradox of tolerance”, comes into the conversation. In order to maintain the tolerant society, you must be intolerant of intolerance.

Of course, this is an unresolvable paradox, which is why our open and tolerant society increasing looks like a theocracy. It turns out that diversity is the bane of human organization because it multiplies the number of people who must be coerced in order to maintain the illusion of consensus. America is looking like a prison yard run by clerics because that is the only way to govern an open society.

It is a very big topic, but the show this week takes a swim in the shallow end of the pool, starting with George Soros and a little bit of Karl Popper. Soros deserves at least one show of his own, as he is one of the most consequential men of the late 20th century and now the first part of the 21st century. Perhaps a show on Yuri Slezkine’s book would be a good basis for exploring the life of George Soros.

As I race toward decrepitude, my interaction with the healthcare system will increase, thus raising my awareness of its many faults. At this point, I am lucky to only have to see the doctor once a year for a physical. I have had occasional injuries in the past, but none of those required more than a single visit. Even so, the lunacy of the healthcare system is obvious even at this stage of my life.

The thing about the system is that it works to the interest of everyone except the patients, but we insist on calling it private healthcare. There is nothing private about it as every aspect is controlled by corporate interests, which both advance and direct government interests in the system. If you want to understand fascist economics, spend some time in the American healthcare system.

Something I did not mention in the show is that a sizable chunk of what passes for healthcare is either unnecessary or not healthcare. The legions of bureaucrats and functionaries that serve only the interest of the system are a great example of Pournelle’s iron law of bureaucracy. The system is an upside-down pyramid with the doctors and nurses at the bottom.

It is hard to see how this system survives the great wave of baby boomer retirement and the wave of demographic change. A highly complex system operated by low-IQ people is doomed due to that mismatch, but throw in the tens of millions of old people demanding services and collapse is the only possible outcome. The Covid response was a glimpse of how bad things will get in the next decade.

This week I thought it would be useful to talk about the Supreme Court case regarding affirmative action in college admissions. As I pointed out on Gab and Twitter, the ruling is a big nothing burger when you read it. Schools cannot come right out and say they are not taking Whites or Asians, but they can still discriminate to their heart’s desire as long as they frame as a character evaluation.

Judge Roberts wrote, “nothing prohibits universities from considering an applicant’s discussion of how race affected the applicant’s life, so long as that discussion is concretely tied to a quality of character or unique ability that the particular applicant can contribute to the university.” Colleges will no doubt read this as a license to go crazy with their antiwhite agendas.

I did not cover this in the show, but this case is a good reminder that words on paper will never constrain a ruling class. The letter of the law means nothing to people who have no respect for the spirit of the law. Right now, our ruling class has no respect for the rules that are supposed to govern Western societies. No amount of ink spilling will cause them to change their minds about it.

Another thing worth mentioning that I did not cover in the show is the implied cowardice in these cases. When the Left had the whip hand on the court, they rammed through as much as they could as fast as they could. When the Right has control of the courts it is nothing but baby steps and concessions to the Left. This recent case was a chance to roll back a lot of horrible ideas, but they cucked.

This removes the last argument for voting Republican. We know that when they have control of Congress they will fink on their voters. When they have control of the White House, they will appoint people like John Roberts to the bench. Even with a stacked court the people who vote Republican cannot expect to get anything for their support, so what is the point of voting for a Republican?

Whenever I do a show on the new religion, I am struck by the stupidity of the claims made by these people, but also the radicalism of it. The people pushing this stuff are not just attacking the Western idea of individual rights. They are attacking the notion that you are an individual with some control over your life. Essential to the social justice cause is the assertion that you are a product of social forces.

Because your protestations against the various social pogroms that come out of the new religion are the result of your conditioning, the social justice warrior sees your resistance as proof of her claims. The more you try to explain why you do not want to submit to the new rules, the more certain she is that she is right. It is why these people are always on the attack. They need the feedback.

Ideologies, like religions, usually fall into two main camps. One camp is world-affirming and one is world-denying. The former accepts the reality of the human condition, while the latter assumes the human condition can be transcended. Folk religions seek help from the gods for practical things like a good harvest. Universal religions promise relief from suffering in the next life.

The new religion is a strange combination of these two main ideas. It starts with the unfairness and inequity of this world. The fight for social justice does not expressly promise salvation or relief from suffering, but the implication is that at some point in the future we attain social justice. On the other hand, it also seems to expect tangible benefits in the present if certain rituals are followed.

In practice the new religion promises the believers liberations from whatever it is they think is oppressing them. The blacks will be free of whiteness. The xirls will be free of the pale penis people. The fat will be liberated from gravity. This desire for liberation from some aspect of the present reality lacks specificity, which suggests it is a destination that lies outside the realm of material existence.

Integral to these claims is the blatant cries for vengeance. The attacks on white people, for example, are purely based in racial vengeance. Whether it is black teens attacking white people on the streets or the system being corrupted to exact vengeance on white people in official settings like a courtroom, the whole purpose is to get some payback in the here and now, not after the revolution.

Of course, much of what all of this depends upon is the mediocrity of the people embracing the social justice religion. Modern technological society has been difficult on the sorts of people bourgeoise society produces in abundance, which is the credentialed mediocrity. These are the people who think they are smart, but struggle with the complexity of modern life.

The new religion offers them refuge. They have to learn a bunch of esoteric insider language and concepts, which reinforces their belief in their own intelligence, but this is not math, so the right answer is a matter of perspective. Everyone gets their own truth and the sense they had to possess special qualities in order to gain it. Social justice is an ideal religion for alienated bourgeoise females.

The funny thing about conspiracy theories is they are a fairly good measure of both social trust and trust in civic institutions. In societies with low trust and corrupt government, people tend to assume things are not as they seem. In high trust societies, people tend to accept things at face value. They also tend to accept what is told to them by the authorities, rather than assume they are lying.

Before the Russian revolution, conspiracy theories were common. Of course, lots of people were conspiring to topple the system, but people assumed that the system itself was not as it was presented. Of course, the Great Fear was a period in the French Revolution where rumors and conspiracy theories about the aristocracy ran wild, ultimately leading the storming of the Bastille.

We seem to be entering a similar phase. People are more likely to believe a rumor about Biden taking bribes than to believe anything he says. For a growing portion of the public, it is assumed that everything that comes from the regime is a lie. The use of the word “regime” is a huge change. It is a word that implies rule by men rather than rule by a system of laws, customs, and institutions.

Of course, it is not helped by the fact that the president is a doddering old fool who barely knows where he is most of the time. The absurdity of this man being in charge of anything raises the question about who is calling the shots. That leads to wondering why they are using a decrepit old man as a puppet. Before long you are down the rabbit hole of conspiracy theories and shadowing actors.

The coming election will give rise to more conspiracy theories. When a regime begins arresting its opponents, only desperate toadies believe what it says. This leaves the field open to alternative explanations for what is happening. We are entering that phase that occurs before every great period of unrest. The age when rumors and conspiracy sound more convincing than observable reality.

The world can go a long time without anything important happening, but then all of a sudden, we get a lot of history in a short period of time. Of course, it just feels this way to us humans with our short lifespans. In those slow periods, lots of things are happening, but they go unnoticed. They build up over time and then all of a sudden, everyone notices them all at once, along with other things.

We may be in one of those processes. The regime is about to arrest another political opponent for the crime of being a political opponent. Trump is not the first to be jailed by the current regime. Dungeons around Washington continue to hold political prisoners waiting for their rigged trial for January 6. Jailing Trump is merely another red line that this regime has been willing to cross.

Most everyone reading this remembers when Americans mocked countries that engaged in these sorts of shenanigans. America was not perfect and there were many cases of people getting abused for their politics, but nothing like this. Victims of the system could expect the public to be outraged. They could also expect people in the system to give them a fair hearing and maybe redress their grievances.

All of a sudden none of that is true. America is one of those countries we used to mock for their lawless disregard for orderly governance. This is just one of the “all of a sudden” events we are about to experience. The war in Ukraine is about to pack a whole lot of history into a short period of time. Months of official lies are about to bob to the surface in all sorts of unpleasant ways.

Of course, our world has been changing in other ways that have largely gone unnoticed but will be noticed all of a sudden. Pat Robertson going to the great fundraiser in the sky is a reminder that we are on the cusp of a great demographic turnover. All those old guys who made their bones in the great interregnum, maybe made it possible, are about to exit the stage. The past is receding quickly.

Years ago, I wrote something about this age being like a point where multiple rivers meet in a great confluence. Instead of rivers, it is long and short social cycles that are ending at the same time. The long cycle is Western liberalism. Another longish cycle is the American empire. A short cycle is the baby boom generation. There are others, all reaching their denouement in this age. It will be a wild ride.

Like many on this side of the great divide, I am not looking forward to the Republican primary, especially the war between Trump and DeSantis. There is a chance that it fizzles before it gets going, as DeSantis is way back in the polls. Ron DeSantis is more of a concept at this point. He is an alternative to Trump, but not the rejection of Trump, so people are free to imagine him as they please.

His first big hurdle will be his lack of personality. Those people who like him because he is Trumpism without Trump will be surprised to learn that the concept made flesh looks and sounds a lot like Michael Dukakis. It is entirely possible that once those voters get a look at him on the stump, they lose interest. This is what happened to Scott Walker in the 2016 primary. His first impression was his last impression.

Given the longshot odds for any Republican in the current year, I wonder if the action does not end up on the other side of the race. Biden has been stuck at 40% in the approval polls for a long time. Most Democrat primary voters, according to polls, would prefer another option. His declining health is one part, but he was never genuinely popular in his own party. He is the result of shenanigans.

At this point, Robert Kennedy is at 15% in the polls. Without anyone knowing anything about him, that is a good starting spot. There is a substantial antiwar vote on the Democrat side that has to be unhappy with what they are seeing. All of those Bernie Bros are still there in the shadows. The regime is trying to close off the Kennedy run before it gets momentum, but that may not be possible.

Joe Biden falling over on stage the other day brought back memories of Jimmy Carter facing another Kennedy in the 1980 primary. Carter won mostly because people still remembered that Ted Kennedy killed Mary Jo Kopechne by leaving her to drown in the backseat of his Oldsmobile. For his part, Carter was one mishap after another throughout the process, constantly reminding people that he was a loser.

We may be seeing this with Biden. It was not just that he toppled over on the stage, but that he could not get up without help. He looked like the old people they use in those commercials for LifeCall. We will see more of these incidents, as Biden is a frail old man struggling to get through each day. It is possible that this summer, Robert Kennedy catches fire as a way for Democratic voters to voice their unrest.

You also have to wonder if Gavin Newsome is not having second thoughts. He was sniffing around last year looking for support to run a primary challenge. Maybe the oligarchs who actually run things will take a look at him as a way to drain support from Kennedy, but also as an alternative to Biden. The next month or two could turn out to be the more interesting story to watch in this election.

A few months ago, when Pedro Gonzalez suddenly became an over-the-top supporter of Ron DeSantis and committed enemy of all Trump supporters on Twitter, I knew I was going to hate the 2024 election. The election was never going to be fun with Trump running, as it would mean another round of foaming at the mouth claims about Trump, but with DeSantis in the race it would be much worse.

The reason it would be worse is lots of people who should know better would convince themselves that DeSantis was the miracle antidote to their troubles. They would make all of the arguments that the anti-Trump people make, but swear they are acting from better motives or making a reasoned critique. Many of the on-line influencers, of course, would be on the payroll of DeSantis.

On the other side would be the vast on-line army of Trump fans, many of whom are on the Trump payroll. They would dust off their playbooks from 2016 when they went to war with the neocons and Buckley-cons, but this time they would not be using jokes and clever memes, but shrill denials and denunciations. In other words, they will just be monkeys fleeing poo at the crap-fest.

This election will be a test of sorts for our people. Many on this side of the great divide still cling to the fantasy of voting our way out of this mess. Their heads tell them it is not possible, but a lifetime of conditioning still traps holds their hearts. Their struggle will be avoiding the crap show, but many will succumb and join it. Those who have broken free from the madness will not enjoy seeing this.

That is the point of the show this week. There are hard truths about this age and our politics that are the final boss on the trip over to this sort of politics. Once these truths are accepted, the coming election is just a reboot of a bad movie. It is Fast & Furious Nth edition, this time with new bad actors to join the bad actors from previous iterations of the franchise. Enjoy the fake explosions.

Yesterday, Bernie Sanders, Ed Markey and some other generic senators from the Democratic Party held a presser with John Fetterman at which they demanded Joe Biden use the Fourteenth Amendment to raise the debt ceiling. Fetterman is unable to form coherent sentences and he is unable to dress like an adult, so he stood around in ratty gym shorts and a hoodie.

The reason Fetterman was invited is he is a rock star in Washington. As the first severely brain damaged man to win a senate seat, he is a trail blazer according to the carny politics of this age. Because he is mentally incapable of doing anything but utter random words, he is a unique act on the political stage. His extended time in the lunatic asylum only added to his novelty.

Politics is nothing more than a carnival act now. The game is to find some novel way to stand out from the crowd but do so in such a way that you can plausibly claim to be part of a designated victim group. For a white guy, the options are limited, as you are assumed to be part of the oppressor class. Fetterman’s crazy act lets him be a victim and lecture the rest of as a white man.

That is something we have to consider. His inability to string a sentence together could be an act. Aphasia is a real thing with stroke victims, but sociopathy is far more common with politicians than aphasia with stroke victims. It is possible Fetterman is overdoing the Sling Blade act as a way to boost his standing. His extended time in the asylum could simply have been rehearsal time.

That is where we are now with our democracy. We have a guy like John Fetterman who could be a brain damaged hobo with no business in the senate. He could also be a faker, pretending to be a brain damaged hobo. Either way, the carny freaks that dominate politics think it is a great act. No one dares say that he is an embarrassment to the system because none of them are embarrassed by him.
